Hiltra

Hiltra over 30 years manufacturer of fire safety cabinets !

Did you know that Hiltra Barneveld has been producing fire safety cabinets for the storage of hazardous materials for over 30 years? The first Labsaver fire safety cabinets in accordance with NEN 2678 saw the light of day in 1989, see picture opposite. At that time a revolutionary and innovative design at a very competitive price. After all these years we are still producing Labsaver fire safety cabinets and since the publication of the European Standard NEN-EN 14470-1 in 2006 we are the only Dutch manufacturer. Something we can be proud of!

But what exactly are the regulations for safety cabinets:

  • A fire safety cabinet whose first use took place after January 1, 2006 must comply with standard NEN-EN 14470-1/2004. This standard has four categories of fire resistance: 15, 30, 60 and 90 minutes.
  • For the storage of hazardous materials that fall under the PGS 15 directive , the version with a 15-minute fire resistance is not suitable.
  • A fire safety cabinet with a fire resistance of 30 minutes is suitable for the storage of up to 150 liters of ADR marked hazardous materials excluding aerosols.
  • A fire safety cabinet with a fire resistance of 60 or 90 minutes is suitable for the storage of 250 liters of hazardous materials including aerosols.
  • Substance separation (incompatible combinations) can be done by placing different categories of hazardous substances in separate drip trays. There must be a drip tray for each hazardous substance to be compartmentalized.
  • The drip pan at the bottom of the fire safety cabinet shall be capable of holding at least 110 %  of the contents of the largest package, but if more,  at least 10% of the contents of all packages present.
  • If there is a need to dispose of released vapors, then effective measures must be taken. It is up to the user of the fire safety cabinet to determine whether harmful vapors may be released and what measures should be taken.
  • On a floor, a maximum of two cabinets may be set up per fire compartment. Here, a basement is considered a floor and the first floor is not.
  • A product certificate must be present in the establishment showing that it complies with the NEN-EN 14470/1 standard.
